Most collections are built one trade at a time. The Datejust funds the Submariner, the Submariner later funds the Daytona. Part exchange is how experienced buyers move up without the hassle of selling one watch and then hunting for the next, and when it is done at a proper dealer it is quick, safe and often better value than people expect. Here is how it works and how to get the most from it.

How part exchange works at a dealer

The process is simple. You bring in the watch you own, we inspect and authenticate it while you wait, and we make you a firm offer on the spot. That offer comes straight off the price of the watch you want to buy, and you pay only the difference. If our stock does not include your next watch, we can source it for you and hold your trade-in valuation while we do. There is no waiting for a buyer, no listing fees, and you walk out wearing the upgrade the same day.

Why trading in beats selling privately

On paper a private sale can achieve a slightly higher headline price. In practice the gap is smaller than it looks, and the costs are real.

Platform and payment fees on the big marketplaces can take five to ten per cent of your sale price.
Private sales take weeks or months, during which prices can move against you.
You carry the fraud risk. Fake payment confirmations and chargebacks on watch sales are common.
Meeting strangers to exchange a five figure watch for cash is a genuine safety concern.
While you wait to sell, the watch you want may sell to someone else.

A part exchange removes all of that in a single transaction with a business you can walk into. For most upgrades, the certainty and speed are worth more than the last few per cent. And if your current watch is particularly desirable, our consignment service is an alternative worth discussing, where we sell it on your behalf on no sale, no fee terms.

Getting the best trade-in value

A few practical points will strengthen your position before you come in.

Bring the box, papers and any service receipts. A full set is worth genuinely more, so never leave the paperwork at home.
Do not polish the watch yourself. Honest wear is fine, but amateur polishing costs money.
Know the market. Check recent sold prices for your reference so the conversation starts from reality.
Negotiate the gap, not the numbers. What matters is the difference you pay, so focus there.
Be flexible on the target watch. A dealer can often do a stronger deal on stock they already hold.

Simple on tax, simple on paperwork

For a private individual in the UK, watches are generally treated as chattels, and personal watches are typically outside the scope of capital gains tax as wasting assets. There is no VAT for you to handle on your side of the trade and nothing to declare in the ordinary case. One visit, one deal, one receipt. If your circumstances are unusual, take proper advice, but for most owners a part exchange is about as clean as a transaction gets.

A worked example

Say you own a tidy 36mm Datejust with box and papers and you want a ceramic Submariner date. The Datejust might trade in at £5,500 against a Submariner priced at £11,500. You pay £6,000, the watches swap over, and you are done in an afternoon. No listings, no couriers, no strangers. It is a common route from a first Rolex to a sports model.

Start your upgrade

If you are thinking about moving your watch on, bring it in to Open Link Company at Castlemead in Bristol for a no-obligation valuation, or send us the details first. We buy outright with same day payment as well as taking part exchanges, so you can compare both routes on the spot. Start on our sell your watch page and tell us what you have.
